Knowledge is power: what your skin would like you to know

Regular use of a well-formulated moisturizer is beneficial to the health of our skin and should be part of even the most basic of skincare routines. One of the main roles of our skin is to act as a barrier between us and the environment, kind of like a wall between two different realms, blocking passage both ways. It would not be exaggerated to think that this barrier is vital to us – as we are susceptible to potentially infectious germs we enter into contact with at any given moment. But a less often considered purpose of the skin barrier is that of maintaining the water content of our bodies, which, considering a majority of our body composition is water, is no mean task. On a smaller, less serious scale, a damaged moisture barrier translates to dry, sensitive and dehydrated skin. These changes are in close connection with inflammatory processes taking place in the skin, which as we know lead cumulatively to skin damage. Thus, not wearing moisturizer can not only leaving you feeling and looking dry like a raisin, but it can also promote aging in the long term.

Effective moisturizers are important

None of us wants to be a raisin (I for one hate those little guys), so how can we help our skin do its job when harsh skincare actives and environmental aggressors weaken it? Unless you are a baby or a child (and if you are, lucky you), you need to give your skin some tender loving care because our skin barrier progressively starts to lose its effectiveness with age. There are many products on the market trying to do just that, but few of them are as potent as the Purito Dermide Cica Barrier Sleeping Pack. Packed with wonder ingredients, this mask-type product is perfect for everyday use too. It is one of the most effective products of its type that I have ever tried.

A little information about the amazing ingredients in this product

The Dermide line has been repackaged in the last couple years, which I have been happy about. They come in really cute squeezy-tubes (perfect for hygiene reasons and for looking good on your vanity). It contains three powerful ingredients that help keep your skin healthy and beautiful:

  • Centella Asiatica extract: extremely popular addition to many skincare formulas. Also known as Cica, it contains many active ingredients with a ton of benefits. Has been used for centuries in traditional medicine as a healing treatment for small wounds. Other benefits include decreasing inflammation levels in the skin or increasing hyaluronic acid and antioxidant synthesis.
  • Squalane: an emollient which is similar to the natural oil our skin produces and helps prevent water loss. Good ingredient for all skin types, including acne-prone.
  • Ceramide NP: skin-identical ingredient which plays an integral part in the health of our skin . Locks in moisture without being irritating (seeing as it´s a normal part of our skin barrier).

Additional important ingredients are:

  • Glycerin: ingredient naturally found in skin which mainly acts as a humectant;
  • Green tea extract: antioxidant and soothing effect;
  • Shea butter: effective emollient which also protects our skin through its antioxidant and vitamin-rich content.

How do I apply the Purito Dermide Cica Barrier Sleeping Pack?

Purito is one of my favorite skincare brands, pretty accessible nowadays and with a ton of great products. No matter what moisturizer I have tried though, I have always wished to have at least one product from the Dermide line on hand. It is perfect for my dry skin, especially in the winter.

As this product is a sleeping pack, it is meant to be used as the last step in the nighttime skincare routine in order to seal in all the good stuff. At night is when we usually need a good moisturizing product the most. Water evaporates from our skin all the time and that is a normal process, but the rate of this process increases significantly during the night, leaving skin more susceptible to dehydration than during the day. The Purito Dermide Sleeping Pack combats this by using occlusive ingredients which block water from leaving the skin.

Following the official instructions, I try not to go overboard and apply a moderate amount (a bit more than pea-sized for my whole face).

I don’t usually use any other moisturizing products before this sleeping pack, as most times I find it is enough for me. However, when my skin is getting into peeling territory, I benefit from layering a few different types of products (adding in a humectant under it for example or an oil on top). Sometimes I spritz a little thermal water before in order to increase the water content that is being sealed on the skin.

Some report that the use of sleeping packs should be limited to a few nights a week because, being of a heavier type, they might clog your pores. I however have never experienced troubles of that sort (and I am acne-prone), but it is best to be observant about your own skin´s response. I have even used actual Vaseline as an occlusive before (technique called slugging) and never experienced problems with that either.

My experience with the Dermide Cica Barrier Sleeping Pack

After applying it, my skin is happy. I can feel a slight film on it but it is not too sticky or greasy. It is so moisturizing, I love it! Usually I get dry patches around my mouth and on my chin and they feel instantly smoother and calmer. This cream does not cause any stinging feeling and it is perfect for when my moisture barrier is damaged.

When I wake up in the morning my skin looks so good, silky, a bit dewy and not tight at all. I wash it off with a gentle cleanser or just rinse it with water and continue with my morning routine.

What is not so great about this product?

Honestly, for me there are no real downsides to this product. The price might seem a bit high, but I find that it really lasts a long time and the quality is very good so it is definitely worth it.

Conclusion

I would totally recommend this product, especially if you have dry skin and find that regular moisturizers just aren’t doing it for you. I can say that it has helped heal my moisture barrier more than once and can actually make my flakiness go away after one use. It makes my skin so happy and healthy, which has made it the perfect recovery moisturizer for me. 10/10, would recommend!
